Season 2 Guests Announcement!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday 4 December 2015

Blog Post

Podcast News

This week brings some very interesting news for the podcast regarding guests for season 2. Firstly I have been in talks with some very interesting people and those talks are for the most part going extremely well. I know its annoying for me to say this and then not drop some names but I feel its best to wait until they are recorded. What I can say is I am very excited for what season 2 could be if these interviews work out and I will drop the names one by one as these interviews are recorded. In other podcast news I am thinking of mixing the formula of the show up for season 2 much to the recomendation of you, the listeners. Yes the one thing most requested when answering my question of how can I improve the show for season 2 was break up the show a bit so its not just an interview and thats it. So I will be talking about things that are on my mind or that I am working on each week. The working title for this segment is Drew's Corner but don't hold me to that title I may rename it haha.

Novel News

The rewrite stage of my novel is taking longer than I wanted but not longer than I expected. On the plus side the first half of the book is a lot better produced and presented than I thought as I was writing the the second half of the story. I may have mentioned this before or not but the story is split into two parts. Part 1 takes place on the Isle of Deamhan in 1986 and part 2 begins in Edinburgh in 2016 and travels to Glasgow and returns to the Isle of Deamhan. The first half of the book was well plotted out in advance and took around a third of the time it took to write part 2. The reason for this being that the story changed genre and style as part 1 was ending. The story began, back in January as a gritty crime story but by April it was now changing and morphing into a story about magic, monsters and mayhem with a Scottish accent. The story now is far more interesting and of a grander nature but that transformation led to certain issues. Issue 1 how to use what I had to set up part 2 and have the reader come along for the journey? Issue 2 would this story work as well on paper as it did in my head? The answer to issue 1 is easy to answer it just took the addition of a few new scenes and characters that became vital in part 2. The answer to issue 2 is unanswered until the novel is released.

The cover design above is a mock-up of the kind of cover I would have liked to use in the beginning but I don't feel represents the mood and direction of the book the way I would like it to so I am changing it. I am also changing the title. So here is the exclusive for you guys, never mentioned anywhere else before the new title for the novel is;

Blog Post

With the first draft of my novel now finished and editing and re-writes underway I have come to realise that I feel partially overwhelmed by this stage of the journey. The closer the book gets to being complete the more I dread releasing it into the world for others to read and judge as I may not be ready to recieve that kind of feedback. i seem to be in a constant battle with doubts, doubts, doubts and oh yeah doubts everyday as I try to turn the barebones and concept of this story into something that will be easily followed and hopefully enjoyed by others.

I have been procrastinating on it for a week now instead concentrating more on finding guests for season 2 of the podcast which has been a mix of both great excitement as I get closer to signing some very cool interviewees up for the show and utter despair and embarassment when I recieve emails back from agents and publicists that basically put me in my place with some harsh but possibly truthful replies telling me I am not worthy of talking to their clients as I am not in their leagues. Now I haven't been going after the Tom Cruise's or Jennifer Lawrence's of the showbiz world but to some of these publicists I am about as much use to the promotion of their clients as a massive flop at the box office. I've had everything from my email writing style to my gall to contact in the first place questioned  by some yet by others I have received some incredible feedback and had agents and publicists go out of their way to try to make an interview happen and to them all I can say is a massive THANK YOU!!!

What I have learned from the podcasting journey which started out contacting celebrities on social media all the way through the more professional route is that you have to develop a rather thick skin if you want to pursue this undertaking. If you want to interview people you admire or find interesting you have to be able to take a "Who do you think you are?" Or "Do not contact me again."  Response because every 50 of these will lead to one that is a step closer to reaching that interview you are after.

The truth is anyone can do a podcast all you need is a recording device which could even be your phone, a computer, a hosting site and an idea of what you want to talk about be it interviews, talking on a certain topic or even about your life anyone can do it and if you are thinking about doing one or have previously just do it. It doesn't matter how many people listen or download your episodes do it for you and an audience will eventually come to you. it is easy to record more difficult to find your audience and guests but it is worth it, most of the time.

So Far I have 4 or 5 pencilled in but as always I won't say who until they are recorded but I'm excited to talk to them and share those episodes with you.  I hope to have the show back week 1 in January but as I will be away around that time for a wedding it may be week 2 instead. i will be doing a Google+ hangout before the end of the year to talk about my novel and officially reveal it's new title..... Yes the title has changed once again and I will give a more indepth description of the plot and characters.

Thanks for still checking out the blog page and facebook page and I hope to see you all in January for season 2: Bigger, Better & Full of Chat.

Drew's 2016 Goals

So as I have recently completed the first draft of my debut novel I have had some free time before taking on the "fun" editing stage. I have recently sent out a few invite/requests to very exciting possible guests to appear on the show in January and beyond as well as heard from a few past guests who would like to appear on the show for a second time so look out for those announcements on this blog and on the facebook page. I have also mapped out what will be my next writing projects including a second novel, a children's book (age range 0-3 years) with the proceeds going to a worthy charity and an extended edition of my memoir entitled "Who Am I" which will feature a brand new cover as well as covering my journey with the podcast, marriage, writing projects as well as a traumatic life event I have been dealing with.

So for 2016 the goals are as follows;

 1. Publish my novel in January

2. Have the extended edition of my memoir out by March
3. Have the children's book out by the summer
4. Season 2 of the podcast to continue to reach a wide audience and to chat with more interesting guests
5. Have my second novel, which I will announce the title and genre of early next year, published by December.

Busy year ahead for yours truly with all my projects so should be a lot of fun. I will be making a few announcements regarding my novel and the podcast before the end of the year and I will also be giving out the results of the question I posted for you guys late last month.

So until then keep up to date by checking the blog and the social media accounts and I look forward to episode 1 of season 2 of the Drew Carson show.

Cheers

Seasons Greetings.... No A different Kind of Seasons Greetings

So with season 1 of the Drew Carson Show coming to an end in the coming weeks, Oct 30th being last show of the season, I have been thinking back over the show's humble origins and how it has grown. I have many friends telling me I'm crazy to have a 2 month Hiatus from the show while it is drawing the strong numbers that it is at the present but I feel the show needs to constantly adapt and change as do I. For that to happen I need to book my guests further in advance than I have in the past. I have been so blessed to have had the success with the calibre of guests that have said yes to the mad Scotsman asking them on social media to appear on a podcast they have not heard of but I need to adapt that also and approach potential guests through agents and publicists also.

I also need to take the time to finish my novel as I have fallen behind and my word count has plummeted in recent weeks. I need to push through the dreck of drab to find my writer's voice once again and complete this story so I can release it into the world and set my mind free to concatenated on my next novel, the first in a trilogy of stories.

So after October 30th the show will be off air until January 9th but there will be content on the blog each week. I will be writing a weekly diary of how the writing is going, the editing process and selecting my beta readers. I will be keeping you up to date with all things show related including exclusive guest announcements and info. So thank you all for being such a huge part of this show and I look forward to bringing you exciting guests come season 2 in January.

The Drew Carson Show So Far

Here's a little visual example of all the special guests we have had up to now on the show. Its crazy to think back to the moment the strange idea for doing this podcast sparked into life to think that all these interesting and cool people would become part of the show along the way. I'd like to thank each and everyone of them for their time and for chatting to me and to also thank each and everyone of you for giving your time each and every week to download and listen to the show. Without all of you guys I would have probably given up around week 5 of our now 23 week journey.

Here's to the next bunch of guests including Phoenix Jones on Friday and to all of you, long may the show continue.

~Drew

This week's Guest

The episode drops on Friday 9th October on Itunes and all other podcast apps as well as on this very blog. Big Picture Thinking

So I have now been podcasting for 22 weeks, I've made mistakes, made changes to the format along the way, met many fascinating people, made friends, found an audience of 1000s coming back each week and that audience is growing rapidly. So, I have decided that to keep that audience strong I will make the possibly stupid decision to finish season 1 of the show in the next few weeks, with 2-5 specials to follow fo the rest of the year including The Return Of The Beast as Dan "The Beast" Severn becomes our first returning guest. We will also have a Halloween special of some description (fingers crossed this pans out) I have a few ideas for what to do but may resort to providing a commentary track for a horror movie if interviews fall through. I promise it will be in-depth and worthwhile. I will also be doing a special where I will talk more in-depth about my debut novel Deamhan and when and where you will be able to buy it along with answering questions from you, the audience. Other specials are underwraps at this time to be revealed on this blog and our facebook page when they will be ready.

Season 2 would then start back in January with exciting interviews lined up with the kind of guests you will be excited to come back for and, as a plus, you all won't have to listen to another q&a from yours truly to cover a week we couldn't arrange a guest for (or atleast that's the plan) I will also be doing a book launch, fingers crossed, in January for which I will do a special podcast episode.

I will finalise all the details after I reveal next week's guest so look for those blog posts coming soon and don't forget to tune in tomorrow for our newest episode featuring askthepilot.com 's Patrick Smith.

Thank you

~ Drew

 This week's episode of the Drew Carson Show is dedicated to the legendary filmmaker Wes Craven who sadly passed away this week after battling brain cancer.  Wes was often celebrated for his work in the horror genre, creating such iconic series as Nightmare on Elm St and Scream along with brutal classics Last House On The Left, The Hills Have Eyes, The People Under The Stairs But Craven was far from a one genre director he directed the great Meryl Streep to an Oscar winning performance in Music of the Heart, Paris, je t'aime (segment: "Pere-Lachaise") as well as the comic book film adaptation of Swamp Thing.

Craven also had a keen eye for talent giving debut roles to the likes of Johnny Depp, Sharon Stone and Bruce Willis.

Technical Difficulties

Due to technical difficulties this weeks' planned episode, part 1 of an interview with the Bullets and Angels comic book creative team Brian Lee Byrd and Saint Yak, will not be uploaded until next week. This interview was filled with funny moments of technical difficulties itself so its quite apt that this should be the one that this should happen to. Here's what the issue is, I am on holiday so I took a disk with the recording of the interview, the show intro and exit music as well as my intro for the guys and my thank yous at the end. The problem is that disk has gotten corrupted somehow and will no longer read on my laptop, which is not the computer, I would use through choice to edit an episode to begin with. My desktop is newer and all the software runs on it easy ozy, on the laptop not so much. I hope to have the episode sorted and uploaded  on Friday 28th.

I would like to apologise to the listeners of the show for the annoyance of this and I hope you guys will stick around and bear with me through these early stage hiccups of the show. I would also like to apologise to Brian and Saint for not having their episode up this week, we had a blast recording it and I know they were looking forward to sharing that experience and their collective journey on creating Bullets and Angels with all of you.

Hopefully (knock wood) this will be the last hiccup for the show and we will be back to regular programming as soon as possible.

Thank You,
~ Drew

The Journey So Far...

   It could be argued the journey to podcasting for me started in part in 2008 or 2009 discussing my then blog and the online community surrounding blogging and vlogging. I was pretty uneasy during that show but managed to hide it enough to be asked back a further five or six more times. It could also be argued it started the first time I heard a Kevin Smith podcast and the notion sat with me and peculated. I listen to multiple podcasts each featuring superior hosts to myself daily which both slaps my self confidence silly and inspires me to always try to improve.

I contacted a bunch of famous people through social media and traditional means to find my first guest to no joy for over a month and had all but given up hope of making this podcast a tangible thing and then I was shocked to find that Billy Lockett was up for it and within 24 hours I was sitting down in my office with little prep and the moment the said hi on the phone I realised all the questions I planned to ask him had gone from my memory. That first episode taught me valuable lessons,

Lesson 1; Preparation is key; you need to research your guest to the point you know more about them than they know about themselves which is not always easy.

Lesson 2; interviewing your friends makes for great episodes. John Farman I knew from the Scottish Cartoonist Meetings I attend each month and we had a natural rapport going from early in the interview which left me feeling at ease and I think I was a better host in that episode than my first.

Lesson 3; don’t advertise interviews until you have recorded them. I made this mistake at the very start of the show, there were two or three names I banded about on social media that then for a multitude of reasons fell through.

Not long after Billy had agreed so did the mighty Jack O'Halloran who was a complete surprise because I thought he wouldn't want to talk to a noobie with no track record. He was a complete joy to chat with and had so many great stories and stories that led to questions I couldn't have pre planned. Again I think this interview taught me something, that being always be ready to flip the script.

Johnny Mac was another that signed on to appear before I really had any strong audience numbers to attract a potential guest with. He was another that was full of a lot of great stories and advice not just for writers but people who are dealing with addiction. I learned with that episode to be prepared for the unexpected.

Irish Mike brought great laughs and funny stories to the show as well as the shows first four figure download numbers. This was the episode that got the show noticed and for a brief few moments trending on Twitter. A show, that is a personal favourite of mine also.

Another personal favourite of mine was the Kim Edgar episode. I think it introduced a new direction for the show and a break from the usual formula of intro, advertisement, interview, thank yous and exit music this one-featured Kim's beautiful music, which really set the interview off perfectly.

The interview with Andrea Perron was the first that caused me to almost have a panic attack haha as I realised after chatting with her for over two hours that my recording software had had a brain fart and only recorded fifteen minutes of it. Thankfully Andrea is a truly great person with a big heart and she came back within a few days and recorded another two hour plus interview that featured a lot of stories and incidents we didn't cover in the first.

The bonus Q&A episode that isn't an episode was an unfortunate experience and one I hope to not have to relive any time soon. My guest that was lined up for that week couldn't record the interview in time and I was left with a dilemma, do I have a week without an episode and possibly lose the audience I had built up or find something else to talk about? In the end I chose, rightly or wrongly, to push ahead and do a Q&A knowing all to well that there may not be any questions thrown my way but thankfully you guys and gals came through and sent a multitude of great questions, thanks again.

Then I sat down and chatted with a man that is an icon for me, the voice behind 2000AD Mr Pat Mills. This was a great interview filled with a lot of topics and great advice for would-be writers and artists out there and Pat was awesome, they say don't meet your heroes but in this instance it was great.

Craig Campbell gave a great insight into the stand-up comedy circuit, and that interview was so sincere and yet funny that it definitely makes my top 5 so far. Craig again is a true gentleman and even gave me tickets to his show at the Edinburgh Fringe which he did not have to do in the slightest as it was my privilege to interview him and I would just like to publicly thank him here for that generosity.

My interview with Gunner was also a lot of fun to do, as a fan of the wrestling business for almost 30 years it was such a privilege to sit down and chat about the industry with a guy living and working within it.

So what's next?

Well immediately next we have an interview with Manga Supremo Sean Michael Wilson, which was a lot of fun and I know you will enjoy it. Beyond that I have a few very interesting and huge interviews in the process of sorting out and if they go through will put this podcast into the next level. I look forward to being able to talk more about them at a future date with all of you. Also next for me personally is the release of my debut novel, Deamhan. Hopefully I can talk a little bit about it in the future months and then maybe a book launch video on this very blog and all the social medias, hey I need to eat right? Got to sell those books haha.

This journey will continue and grow from strength to strength and I have all of you to thank for that so a massive thank you, one and all (not just one honest) and here's to the next 1000 listeners to join us on this fun ride.

~ Drew

Novel Announcement

No not an announcement regarding the show but as my name is in the title I thought it apt that this here blog page was the perfect place to make such an announcement. The novel I have been writing since January under much guarded secretism is at a stage where, although not finished by any means, is close enough that I am finally ready to reveal the title. Those who follow me on Twitter will have seen the teaser picture yesterday;

And featured the challenge to any eagle-eyed follower to work out what it said. Well with a few guesses sent my way varying from the ridiculously funny to the very close but no cigar but no one hit the nail on the head. Well here you go folks;

That's right the novel is entitled "Deamhan" and is set in 1986 and 2016 on a fictitious island off the coast of Glasgow, Scotland named Isle of Deamhan. It is a tale of horror, murder, magic and small town fears written in dream logic. This project is something I have been working on for a looong long time and am thrilled to be that bit closer to sharing with you all. I believe, fingers crossed, this will be available by December but don't hold me to that haha I have a long road of re-writes and beta reading ahead but damn it if the finish line isn't in sight.

I will tell you guys and gals first the whens and wheres regarding the release of the novel and all the information regarding the publishing process.

And regarding the show,  we have the first part of our fantastic interview with Sean Michael Wilson this week which is a fun, fun listen (to him not me haha) and we have the first episode with two guests at once coming up very soon so keep following this blog and the show's page over at Facebook and if you want to know more about me follow me over on Twitter @theDrewCarson.

Cheers for making this such a fun ride guys and gals,
Drew
